One Climber Covid-19 Positive at SLC Boulder World Cup
The first international bouldering world cup to take place in North America in over a year was hosted by USA Climbing in Salt Lake City this past weekend. The International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC) has said in a statement that one climber out of 150 competitors has tested positive for Covid-19.
The press release reads: International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC) and USA Climbing inform that one athlete tested positive for COVID-19 out of the over 150 tests that were run on Mon. May 24. As soon as IFSC Technical Delegate Graeme Alderson was notified, he implemented the Addendum to IFSC Rules: Response protocol in case of positivity, and Decision process in case of positivity. The IFSC and USA Climbing, in cooperation with the Utah State authorities, are currently working to address the issue and protect the health of athletes, team officials, IFSC and USA Climbing officials and staff members, and all the parties involved. Further communications will follow in due time.
In July 2020, the IFSC created and addendum to IFSC rules to be used during the Covid-19 pandemic. Read the 10-page addendum here. All athletes, officials and staff had to submit a negative Covid-19 PCR test, taken no more than three days prior to the arrival day, to the Outbreak Response Coordinator Doctor upon arrival/registration at the event.
This situation has occurred with increasing questions about the feasibility of the Tokyo Games going ahead, in the face of an ongoing pandemic, and strong negative public sentiment in Japan.
