A Memoir of Survival, Silence, and the Sea Within

High Mountains, Deep Oceans is a six-part memoir series told out of chronological order, beginning at the edge of endurance and circling back through the forces that forged—and ultimately transformed—a life.

Opening with solo, engine-free ocean crossings and life-threatening collapse at sea, the series first encounters a man driven by will, motion, and survival. It then turns backward to childhood, early rebellion, desert hardship, and the making of that will—before moving forward again through love, war, fatherhood, loss, and a final reckoning with what it means to come home.

Written with restraint and unflinching honesty, High Mountains, Deep Oceans traces the outer landscapes of mountains, deserts, and oceans alongside the inner terrain of trauma, silence, and survival. Across its arc, the series asks not only how a person endures—but what remains when endurance is no longer enough, and survival must give way to meaning.

Book One The Sea Within

A voyage to the edge of the map—and the center of the soul.

The Sea Within is a literary memoir of extreme sailing, physical collapse, and the moment endurance stops functioning as identity.

For years, survival was defined by motion. Engine-free crossings across the Pacific became proof—of competence, independence, worth. When the body began to fail at sea and swallowing turned into a daily negotiation that could not be won, the strategy that had sustained a life of self-reliance collapsed. What followed was not triumph, but descent: starvation, medical failure, and the slow dismantling of an identity built on pushing forward alone.

Set against a Pacific crossing and its aftermath, the memoir traces a clear emotional arc from endurance to self-compassion. The narrative moves toward stillness rather than conquest, culminating in an encounter at sea that strips away the need to prove anything at all. While the story opens questions that echo beyond this volume, The Sea Within is designed to stand alone, offering a complete and resolved transformation.

The book will resonate with readers drawn to adventure as a catalyst for inner change rather than technical or instructional narratives.

STORIES BETWEEN THE LINES

Not everything could live inside the memoir.

Some material was cut for pacing. Some for legal or personal risk. Some because it asked for a different kind of telling. What remains lives here.

Between the Lines includes:

  • Deleted scenes — full vignettes and expanded incidents only glimpsed in the book.

  • Deep dives — background, context, and the forces beneath key chapters.

  • Q&A and reflections — direct responses, clarifications, and unfiltered hindsight.

  • Artifacts and media — letters, journals, maps, photographs, and occasional audio or video.

These pieces sit alongside High Mountains, Deep Oceans rather than inside it. They deepen the story without reshaping its spine. I share new work occasionally.
