Ontario Man Summits Everest, Another Climber Dies

Of the handful of Canadians attempting to summit Everest this season, at least one has reached the top. Sadly, a fourth climber died this week on the worldโ€™s highest peak.

Isaac William Selby from Lindsay, Ontario, summited on an expedition organized and guided by International Mountain Guides. Selby once owned and operated Selby Electric. In 2016, he walked from the U.S./Canada border to the U.S./Mexico border and raised close to $20,000 for Hope Grows Haiti.

Over 20 other climbers summited on Selbyโ€™s team, including a father/son/daughter team: Tenzing Dorjee Sherpa (father), Sonam Tashi Sherpa (son) and Pasang Kanchi Sherpa (daughter).

Wong Dorchi Sherpa working with Seven Summits Club died near the South Col from unknown causes. The same expedition team had to get a rescue for Russian climber, Dmitry Livanov, who was helicoptered from camp two complaining of chest pains. There have been a number of heli rescues from above base camp this year.

There have now been four deaths on Everest this year. Pemba Tashi Sherpa from Sankhuwasabha died when he fell into crevasse near camp two on May 18. Earlier on May 12, Abdul Waraich of Switzerland, and Puwei Liu of U.S.A., died during their descent.

A number of climbers are waiting for another weather window as the Himalayan pre-monsoon season will be ending shortly.
